MUNICIPAL THEATRE
Cagli's outstanding opera house was opened in 1878 and, after recent restoration, remains one of the jewels amongst the region's theatres. The famous tenor Mario del Monaco made his debut here.
TORRIONE (TOWER)
The spectacular oval tower was built in 1481 by Francesco di Giorgio Martini as part of the fortifications that once stood on the hill above it (the underground passage connecting them still exists). It currently hosts a permanent collection of modern sculpture..
CHURCH OF SAN PIETRO
This church attached to a Benedictine monastery dates back to the 14thC. Inside you can admire various works including a painting by Gaetano Lapis on the main altar and a notable wooden 16thC Crucifix.
CHURCH OF SAN NICOLO'
This church attached to a Domenican convent owes its current appearance to rebuilding in the 18thC. Inside you can admire works by Cagli's own Gaetano Lapis (18thC).
PALAZZO TIRANNI CASTRACANE
The stuccoed ceilings by Brandani (1555) and a monumental fireplace by Elpidio Finale (1600) are amongst the masterpieces conserved in this palace built in the mid 16thC for Felice Tiranni, the then Bishop of Urbino.
PALAZZO PUBBLICO (TOWN HALL)
The noble Palazzo Comunale dates back to the rebuilding of the city in 1289. It was extensively enlarged in 1463 by the great military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini for Duke Federico da Montefeltro. Admire the 16thC fresco in the atrium.
CHURCH OF SAN GIUSEPPE
Of ancient origins, this fine church has barrel vaulting decorated with stucco work from the school of Brandani and frescoes by Girolamo Cialdieri (c.1636). The painting on the main altar is by Gaetano Lapis (1764).
CHURCH OF SAN BARTOLOMEO
Although originally built in 1380, its reconstruction in the 17thC transformed this little church into one of the town's Baroque gems. Inside look out for the charming wooden statues of the Apostles and the richly-decorated gold and cobalt blue ceiling.
CATHEDRAL BASILICA
Construction of Cagli's main church began in 1293 but was not completed until the early 15thC. It was drastically reorganised in 1646. Of the original building the fine Gothic portal of 1413 remains. Inside see paintings by Gaetano Lapis, Sebastiano Conca, Luigi Grazi and a fine copy of Barocci's Annunciation.
CHURCH OF SAN FRANCESCO
One of Cagli's most monumental churches, it was built between 1236 and 1240 and boasts a notable 14thC entrance. Inside see the alluring canvasses by Raffaellino del Colle (c.1540) and Gaetano Lapis (1730).
CHURCH OF SANT'ANGELO MINORE
This delightful church, originally built in 1362, has an elegant loggia dating from 1560 and an outstanding painting, a "Noli mi tangere" by Timoteo Viti (c.1510).
CHURCH OF SAN FILIPPO
An architecturally notable church originally built in 1425. It was given its present Baroque face in the early 18thC. Look out for the elliptical cupola with fish-scale roof tiles and two works inside by Gaetano Lapis.
CHURCH OF SANTA CHIARA
Originally built in the 13thC, this attractive church was extensively restored in the 17thC. Inside are paintings by Gaetano Lapis, Lucio Dolci and Giovanni Conca.
PONTE MALLIO ROMAN BRIDGE
Parts of this imposing ancient bridge may date back to Etruscan times. Built of massive blocks of local stone, it was heavily restored in Imperial Roman times.
CHURCH OF SAN DOMENICO
Fine frescoes by Giovani Santi, Raphael's father, are the outstanding feature of this large early 14thC church as well as paintings by Cagli's Gaetano Lapis and Giuliano Persciutti (c.1535).
CHURCH OF S. MARIA DELLA MISERICORDIA
This church is of Romanesque origins and has an elegant baldacchino, an interesting 15thC painted terracotta statue and two works by Claudio Ridolfi (c.1640).
